Vigotone Notes
From the Vigotone web site:
Generally, Vigotone was pretty good at identifying the songs it released. But like all good bootleggers, they occasionally messed up. This collection seems to contain most of the tracks listed on the infamous "1988 Capitol Tape Box Memo", and if you also own the 1993 Good Vibrations box set, you've got all of the tracks that are listed on the tape box memo (except for the 1:46 minute version of "Been Away Too Long")!
Below is a listing just what Vigotone called each song, and if there is a mistake, the proper name. (Brian also changed many of the song titles on his finally completed version of Smile! I've included these titles as well!)
VIGO 110 - 25 Tracks - Total Time: 62:43
1. Heroes and Villains (7:06) This is actually the rare "Heroes and Villains - Part Two"!
2. Do You Like Worms (3:56) Sounds the same as the version found in the Good Vibrations box, but with a few snatches of dialogue heard buried into the mix.. (Called "Roll Plymouth Rock" on Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE)
3. Medley: The Old Master Painter / You Are My Sunshine (1:11) Vocal version. The running time is close to the one listed on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo".
4. Wonderful (2:06) Sounds the same as the version found in the Good Vibrations box.
5. Child Is Father Of The Man (1:56) Complete version. The running time is the same as the one listed on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo".
6. Prayer (1:09) Sounds like the Good Vibrations box version (as Our Prayer), but there is some snickering at the end of this version.
7. Cabin-Essence (2:34) Outtake. (Omits the "Grand Coolee" section.)
8. Good Vibrations (3:33) Outtake. (Sounds great!)
9. Vege-Tables / I'm In Great Shape (3:34) This track is different than the one that is found in the 1993 Good Vibrations box set. It has some chatter during the "Mama Says" section, and it doesn't have the "da da datta da" ending the Capitol one has. "I'm In Great Shape" doesn't appear here.
10. Wind Chimes (2:23) This track is similar to the one that is found in the 1993 Good Vibrations box set.
11. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow (2:07) This track includes combines the "Fire Intro", as well as actual "Fire" track. Both are on the 1988 Capitol Tape Box Memo. ("Fire Intro" is part of the 1993 Good Vibrations box set. It's called "Heroes And Villains - Intro".)
12. Cool Cool Water (2:57) Longer than the version eventually released.
13. Surf's Up (5:18) This track combines the "track only" version and Brian's solo vocal version (from the Good Vibrations box and 1988 memo).
14. Prayer (5:05) Recording session. (Why is Mike Love such a dope?!)
15. I Love To Say Dada (1:27) This track is the same one that is found in the 1993 Good Vibrations box set. (Called "In Blue Hawaii" on Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE)
16. Untitled (She's Goin' Bald) (0:55) Listed on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo". (This is the "He Gives Speeches" version.)
17. Untitled (With Me Tonight) (0:55) Seems pretty much like an except of the version released on Smiley Smile.
18. Wonderful (2:09) Instrumental version.
19. Child Is Father Of The Man (1:42) A shorter version that has less "Child Is Father Of The Man" vocals.
20. You're Welcome (1:04) A different mix than the B-side of the Heroes and Villains 45. May the the version listed on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo".
21. Heroes and Villains / Do You Like Worms (0:49) Outtake section of H&V.
22. Heroes and Villains / Do You Like Worms (0:27) "Bicycle Rider" section (short).
23. Heroes and Villains / Do You Like Worms (1:15) "Bicycle Rider" section with a bit of the main H & V theme.
24. Heroes and Villains / Do You Like Worms (3:37) "Do You Like Worms" outtake.
25. Heroes and Villains / Do You Like Worms (3:28) "Do You Like Worms" outtake.
VIGO 111 - 14 Tracks - Total Time: 70:34
1. Good Vibrations (7:41) Recording session.
2. Cabin-Essence (4:05) Outtake. (Sounds like an acetate.)
3. Surf's Up (6:28) Recording session of the instumental track. A highlight of this collection!
4. Tones / Tune X (3:02) This is actually a recording session for the track "Holidays".
5. Tones / Tune X (2:21) This is actually the track "Holidays"! (Called "On A Holiday" on Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE)
6. Medley: The Old Master Painter / You Are My Sunshine (1:08) Instrumental version.
7. George Fell Into His French Horn (9:12) Weird.
8. Mrs O'Leary's Cow (3:51) Outtake. Longer than the version listed on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo".
9. Barnyard (0:57) Listed on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo".
10. The Woodshop Song (1:36) Listed as "I Wanna Be Around" on the "1988 Capitol tape box memo". (Called "I Wanna Be Around/Workshop" on Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE)
11. Holidays (2:36) This is not "Holidays", but rather "Look"! (Called "Song For Children" on Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE)
12. Prayer (1:02) This track is the same one that is found in the 1993 Good Vibrations box set.
13. Surf's Up (2:30) The version used on Leonard Bernstein's CBS TV special: INSIDE POP: THE ROCK REVOLUTION...?
14. Smile Era Party (24:05) The title says it all!
