Liner Notes
Brian Wilson started working on the SMiLE album in earnest in August 1966. He first recorded "Wind Chimes" on August 3; from this session comes the "ending" section, take 3 (track 1). A slightly shorter version appeared on the Sea of Tunes box set. The song was then re-recorded on October 5; from this session comes two previously unbootlegged tracks: the complete instrumental track for take 23 (track 2), and the isolated piano tag (track 3). Another song started in August was "I Ran" (a.k.a. "Look"). The instrumental track was recorded on August 12 (vocals were later recorded under the title "I Ran" on October 13, but this has not surfaced); the version on this disc (track 4) is an attampt as assembling the pieces together that has never been bootlegged in this form before. The instrumental track for "Wonderful" was recorded August 25, 1966, with vocals overdubbed on October 6 and December 15. The instrumental track by itself (track 5) appears here exclusively, albeit in poor sound quality. The vocal overdub (track 6) has bee bootlegged before, but this version is the best sounding by far. Take 7 of "Holidays" (track 7, recorded September 8, is here in far superior sound quality to the Archaeology bootleg.
By October Brian was in full swing and in the midst of what is often referred to as "Prime Time" SMiLE. The instrumental track for "Cabin Essence" was recorded October 3, 1966, with vocals overdubbed on December 6 and 27. The instrumental sessions (tracks 8-11) are heard here for the first time and are one of the real highlights of this collection. Also included are numerous mixes of the verse/chorus assembly (tracks 12-16), all of which contain very subtle differences from the mixes that have circulated before. The rest of the tracks (tracks 17-21) also are similar to what has been bootlegged in the past, but are taken from alternate and better-sounding sources. "Child Is Father Of The Man" was attempted twice in 1966, and most everything on this disc originates from the second session held on October 12, 1966 for the instrumental track. The verse (track 22), bridge (track 23), and chorus (track 24) sections have both been bootlegged many times, but they are in best-ever quality here. The complete backing track (track 25) represents the true structure of the song as conceived by Brian Wilson in 1966, and first appeared in abysmal quality on Archaeology; here is the clean version. Finally, the piano section (track 26) was a later addition to the song, but the exact date is unknown. This piece appeared on the Sea of Tunes box set incorporated into a longer assembly of the song, but is isolated here for the first time. The instrumental track for "Do You Like Worms" was recorded October 18, 1966; vocals were overdubbed on the 21st. The two mixes here (tracks 27-28) are very similar to what has been bootlegged before, but the mix is slightly different and there are longer spaces between some of the sections.
Work on SMiLE continued fast and furious in November. The instrumental track for the "1st Movement" of "Surf's Up" (tracks 1-2) was recorded November 4. Part of this session has been bootlegged before, but the excerpt on this disc appears here exclusively. The solo piano/vocal performance (track 3) was recorded December 15, 1966, and is here in its most complete form. The instrumental track for "The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine" (track 4) was recorded November 14, 1966. This particular mix appeared on many of the early SMiLE bootlegs, but this is the cleanest version yet. The fade section with vocal overdubs (track 5) sounds much better here than it did on Lost Surf Songs, Vol. 2, but it still isn't very clean. "The Elements, Part One: Fire" was recoreded November 28, 1966. The stereo version (track 6) appeared on Archaeology in worse sound quality. The mono mix (track 7) appears in as good if not better quality on the Sea of Tunes box set, but is from a different source.
The SMiLE Radio Promo (track 8), now featured in much better quality that on the early SMiLE bootlegs, is placed here to mark the division between the "Prime Time" SMiLE period and the more haphazard sessions that followed in 1967. Kicking off this later period is the piece known as "Water Chant", a recording which is difficult to date accurately but is most likely from late 1966-early 1967 and not a home studio recording from later in 1967 judging by the tell-tale sound of the Leslie speaker. The version on this disc (track 9) is only slightly longer than what appeared on the Sea of Tunes box set. The curious and undatable "Untitled Instrumental" (track 10) has circulated freely on the internet but makes its CD debut here.
By February 1967, Brian was putting all his juice into preparing "Heroes And Villains" for a single release, and the album sessions began to lose definition. A cover of the Bacharach/David "Little Red Book" (track 11), another recording that had been available only on the internet until now, was recorded for a forgotten purpose on February 14. Equally baffling is the work Brian spent on "With Me Tonight". Some researchers have speculated that is was recorded in February-March for possible use as a B-side to a single. The session tape (track 12) is here in a longer from that before, and the two stereo mixes (tracks 13-14) were on Archaeology, but incomplete. Another one-off project was Carl Wilson's "Tones" (a.k.a. "Tune X") (tracks 15-17), recorded in march. Only one mix has been available on the internetl all three tracks appear here for the first time on CD.
By April, struggling with a wandering focus and mired in a lawsuit with Capitol, Brian announced "Vega-Tables" would be the new single. The early version of the song (tracks 18-20) appears on a comp reel that may date as late as March 1967. These mixes are in near-perfect sound quality. It was later re-recorded in early April. A tape of the rough assembly (track 21) appears here for the first time, as does the extended session tape for the fade section (track 22), recorded April 12. The mono mix of the fade (track 23) is slightly longer and from a different source from the one that apeared on the Sea of Tunes box set. "I Love To Say Da Da" was the last song Brian worked on before moving the studio into his home and beginning work on what became Smiley Smile Sessions were held on May 16 (tracks 24-29) and May 17 (tracks 30-31). All of these apear on this CD for the first time.
