SMiLE… Version 1.0 JUST THE FACTS.

VERSION NOTES

Version 0.5 – 12th May 2003. First version.

At this point everything’s open to change. Section Titles of songs are sometimes pretty wacky (i.e., Heroes & Villains – Spooky Instrumental) but I think they’re memorable enough to identify what the section is and remember.

Please e-mail dar.ren@ntlworld.com with the header “SMiLE Facts” with any suggestions, changes, additions, whatever you like. This document is supposed to be helpful, any way it can be improved upon is welcomed.

Additions already under consideration:

A SMiLE Era Who’s Who. Lyrics. 1966/1967 – SMiLE era timeline.

Version 0.8 – 16th May 2003.

  • Changed all instances of Vigotone to correct spelling, Vigotone. Thanks to Chris (bravesfan1).
  • Added MISC RECORDINGS section. Thanks to Jeff (bassplayer176) for the reminder.
  • Added Vigotone 01/25 – Do You Like Worms info. Thanks to Richard Powell.
  • Minor formatting changes.
  • Added ‘Misc. Recordings’ section.
  • Added info for ‘Heroes & Villains – Bells Intro’ ‘Bag of Tricks’ ‘Untitled Instrumental’ and ‘Smog’ from Project SMiLE.
  • Added info for ‘SMiLE Promo’ from Early Years SMiLE.
  • Added info for ‘SMiLE Era Party’ from Vigotone SMiLE.
  • Added info for ‘Psychedelic Talk’ from Sea of Tunes 14: Pet Sounds.
  • Added ‘Uncirculating Audio’ section.
  • Added Lyrics section. Referenced lyrics in Look! Listen! Vibrate! SMiLE!, Sea of Tunes 17: The SMiLE Sessions booklet, and the ‘Surf’s Up’ CD lyrics. Also transcribed ‘He Gives Speeches’, ‘I’m in Great Shape’ (which I know there’s controversy over the lyrics to).
  • Changed spelling of Coolee to Coolie throughout.
  • Added full information to ‘Good Vibrations’ section.

Still to come: 1966/1967 – SMiLE era timeline. SMiLE Who’s Who.

Please e-mail dar.ren@ntlworld.com with the header “SMiLE Facts” with any suggestions, changes, additions, whatever you like. This document is supposed to be helpful, any way it can be improved upon is welcomed.

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.

Version 1.0 – 27th May 2003

After a much needed break…

  • Fixed ‘You’re Welcome’ info from Vigotone SMiLE.
  • Added information for ‘Barnshine’ (AKA Barnyard fade with Sunshine lyrics) – thanks to Richard Powell.
  • Added information for ‘Smog’ (AKA ‘Smog rap’ etc)
  • Added Project SMiLE tracks to ‘I Love To Say Da-Da’ – thanks to Chance Lander

Added ‘Sessions Timeline’. Basically a collection of the session recording dates from elsewhere in the document.

And I think that’s it for now. Any additions, corrections, suggestions, please e-mail dar.ren@ntlworld.com with the header ‘SMiLE Facts’.

Thanks for all the encouragement and mails.

INTRODUCTION

This document is an attempt to present the facts about SMiLE and the recordings of SMiLE currently available to collectors. The intention is to only include what we know as facts and to leave all the theories and possibilities aside in an attempt to create a simple guide for new-comers to make their own minds up about SMiLE before the countless theories, arguments and rumours start to take over as well as providing collectors with a guide to available SMiLE era recordings.

Of course, this document wouldn’t have been even dreamt about without the work of the usual suspects including, but not only: The SMiLE Shop, Jon Hunt, John Lane, Brad Elliott, Alan Boyd, Cam Mott, & Lou Shenk.

See Version Information for further thanks.

SMiLE – Just the Facts was written and is maintained by D.Lawrence. May 2003.

THE FACTS ABOUT SMiLE

The original title for SMiLE was Dumb Angel.

Brian produced a written 12 track list for SMiLE early December 1966…

  • Do You Like Worms
  • Wind Chimes
  • Heroes & Villains
  • Surf’s Up
  • Good Vibrations
  • Cabin Essence
  • Wonderful
  • I’m In Great Shape
  • Child is Father of The Man
  • The Elements
  • Vega-Tables
  • The Old Master Painter.

The above tracks were written by Brian Wilson & Van Dyke Parks with the exceptions of Good Vibrations and The Old Master Painter.

In January 1967 covers and booklets for the album were printed, to the above track listing Capitol had added ‘See label for correct playing order.”

On 6th May 1967 Derek Taylor announced in his English column that SMiLE had been scrapped.

A memo dated 25th July 1967 at Capitol stated that the booklets prepared for SMiLE would be used for the album which would follow Smiley Smile.

Heroes & Villains was released as a single on 31st July 1967.

The album Smiley Smile was released 5th September 1967.

In 1971 Carl Wilson attempted to complete the SMiLE album, this was not released.

Notes: 1. 10452 Bellagio Rd. = BeachBoys Studio. If either one is mentioned by itself, it's only because that's what appears foremost on the sheet. 2. The category of "Session Musicians" is synonymous with "Employees", as the more accurate designation on the sheet is "Employee's Name". 3. What's "AFM"? American Federation of Musicians. http://surfermoon.com/boots.shtml

GUIDE TO AVAILABLE RECORDINGS:-

KEY TO TERMS USED.

Channel: Left or Right.

Double Tracking: Singing the exact same vocal as an overdub onto the original, this strengthens the sound of the voice.

Mixing: Setting the volume and sound of each instrument as well as where the instrument is going to be in the stereo mix.

Mix: A version of a track which is created as a stereo track by playing the multi-track and ‘Mixing’ the instruments. This is then treated as a final track or overdubbed onto.

Multi Track: While normal audio cassettes record two tracks (left and right), multi-track recordings record more.

Overdub: Adding a new instrument or vocal on top of an existing recording.

OOPS: Out of Phase Stereo. A technique used to eliminate part of stereo recordings. This is done by fans to hear the song in a different way. It’s fun… Open your selected audio file in, for example, Cool Edit. Select one channel (left or right) and ‘Invert’ it (there should be a menu option to do this). Then ‘Average’ the track. This mixes 50% of the left channel with 50% of the right. Now sit back and find out if you’ve uncovered any interesting audio.

Track: A single track of a multi-track recording.

Tracking: Instrumental recording session, particularly for complete backing tracks.

Sequence: The order in which each section of the track is placed. Or which order on the album the tracks are placed.

Vox: Vocals.

CHILD IS THE FATHER OF THE MAN

FACTS: At Brians suggestion part of this track was used as the final section of Surf’s Up when it was assembled for release on the Surf’s Up album.

SESSIONS: 07-Oct-1966 – 7 Musicians + Carl & Brian – Western Recorders. 12-Oct-1966 – Beach Boys – Goldstar Recorders. 02-Dec-1966 – Beach Boys – Goldstar Recorders. 06-Dec-1966 – Beach Boys – Goldstar Recorders.

AUDIO: Sea of Tunes 17: The SMiLE Sessions

02/01 – Child is The Father of The Man (Part 1, Takes 1-4) 4:51 Interesting to note that Chuck needs to be told the title of the song.

This is 4 takes of the ‘Chorus’ section of the track. The section versions produced at the sessions on this disk are different from the section versions used in the mixes available elsewhere. Couple this with the title mix-up and I think it’s safe to assume that this version was scrapped.

02/02 – Child is The Father of The Man (Part 1, Take 8) 0:40 Take 8.

02/03 – Child is The Father of The Man (Verse, takes 1-10) 1:36 10 takes, tape cuts at end so final take is incomplete.

02/04 – Child is The Father of The Man (Take Unknown) 0:59 A piano only version of the chorus. This was later overdubbed with vocals.
